Feng Shui for Real Estate: is my Home Right for Me?

by Rodika Tchi, MSc

Humans have been looking for shelter since time immemorial. Being an integral part of Mother Nature and connected to her on a very deep level, we still need to be protected from many harsh natural elements and create a safe and comfortable space of our own.

Starting with basic safety and health concerns and culminating with the most fundamental human need - to love and be loved - we are looking for a home to help us express ourselves, to support and nurture us, as well as serve as a "protective shield" from the outside world.

Choosing the right home can be as stressful as choosing the right partner. Is there such thing as the right partner? There are certainly people out there who are much more compatible with you than the others. The same applies to homes.

How would you know if your home is right for you? Will your family be thriving in it or will there be lots of challenges? What would you be looking in a home if you are considering buying?

Feng Shui has been used for many years now to help locate or create the best homes. It has become very popular in the past several years in North America, and with the popularity of it, so have the common misconceptions and stereotypes as to what feng shui is and how it should be used. This ancient body of knowledge goes well beyond using Asian looking objects and moving the furniture.

Simply stated, the right application of feng shui balances, heals and re-energizes any given space by working with Chi, or vital energy; thus improving the health and well-being of people who inhabit the space. With the feng shui analysis, the consultant would match the client's birth data with the compass reading of the potential home to look for the type of relationship that will be created, as well as for the energetic personality of the home.

So, how do you choose the perfect home by using feng shui? Below are two simple feng shui checklists of things to avoid and things to look for while considering buying a home.

THINGS TO AVOID:

* A straight walkway to the front door

* The front door aligned with the back door

* A wall facing the front door

* Bathroom facing the front door

* Stairs close to the front entrance

* Bedroom over garage or Kitchen

* Bathroom door facing the Kitchen

THINGS TO LOOK FOR:

* Curved pathway to the main entrance

* Good "landing" space at the main entrance

* Open center of the house

* Harmonious flow of energy

* Good backing for the house

* Amount of natural light

* Water features

There is certainly so much more about the feng shui of choosing a new home - from matching the direction of the front door of the house with the best directions as calculated by your birth data to being sure that the male and the female side of the house are balanced. Still, no matter how complex this body of knowledge is, do not disregard it just because it seems too complicated - just start with the basic level and see what a difference it makes while choosing or creating the best place to live!

And what if you keep looking and cannot find the place you would like to call your new home? Here are some remedies for your existing home

TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING:

* Keep the center of your home clean, clutter-free and open.

* Have a pleasing welcoming entrance. If you face a wall or stairs first thing when you come in, apply specific feng shui cures or your life will be stuck in unnecessary struggles.

* Try to limit Metal element in the East area, which governs family and health. Introduce healthy plants, color green, crystals. A water fountain here is very good.

* Consciously work on reducing the EMF radiation in your bedroom. Provide an ideal space for your body to regenerate, replenish and heal itself during sleep.

* Focus on creating a sensual, clutter-free, beautiful bedroom to promote sexual healing and encourage an open flow of energy between partners. Unfortunately, way too many bedrooms today are "strongly opposed" to a harmonious loving relationship, no matter how visually enticing these bedrooms may look.

Last, but not least. Homes, just like people, keep evolving. Let you home support you, express who you are, as well as go with you thru various changes. The ultimate feng shui test of a home, no matter new or old, big or small, outrageously expensive or not, - will be the following: At the end of the day, when you come home, do you feel like it puts its arms around you?

I hope your home does.
