"There is less to fear from outside competition than from inside inefficiency, discourtesy and bad service."

I like the definition of business as solving a customer's problem and creating sustainable profits over time. And the definition of the meaning of the business as having on impact on people's lives. It comes from Mark Kaiser, the famous go-to guy who has run companies ranging from $40 million to $1 billion and has twice won the Forbes magazine's High Tech 50 award.

Being a highly sought after strategy advisor to CEOs, he often points out to the importance of paying attention to one's work environment. "Make the space to be best for them, so that they can be the best they can be. A good design shows customers they are important and leaves an impression that you care", says Kaiser.

Yes, the importance of good design has been shown to increase profits and improve productivity. Sadly though, way too many companies have no awareness of the power of their environment, and even among those companies that do put the effort in a good presentation, the "good design" often stops in areas where customers don't have access to.

Having a successful business comes first and foremost from having an enthusiastic and talented team of people who care about the company and its long-term growth. It comes from taking care of their well-being at work, so that they can do their best in strengthening the business and infuse it with creative ideas and high energy.

The goal of this new e-zine is to educate on many uses of feng shui, on how it can help your business grow and prosper; as well as to dissipate quite a few stereotypes and misunderstandings as to what feng shui is and what can it do.

To create a high energy office by following feng shui principles, start with the basics: pay attention to the quality of air, overall feel of the space, seating positions of key people in the company, the look and feel of the main entrance, quality of lighting (limit the overhead fluorescent lighting as its frequency dulls the brain waves). Many more basics will be covered in the future issues.

For more advanced users there is just an update for the 2005 that might be useful to keep in mind: if you are starting a new business this year and are to choose a new office suite, retail space or factory site, it would be advisable not to move into an east facing property. The specific east energies this year will not only affect the health of the business (in terms of profit and loss) but can also dampen the ambition of those who are just starting out.

Here are some good books on feng shui for business to look into; feel free to e-mail me with short questions and best of luck to you in the New Year!

ASK THE FENG SHUI CONSULTANT:

Question:

"We are expanding our business and moving into a bigger space. Although we are very happy about it, I am concerned that the building is located in a cul-de-sac. I've heard this is not good. What is your opinion about it, is this very negative or are there any other, more important factors? I appreciate your help. Jim Nelson, Toronto, Canada "

Answer:

Dear Jim: First of all, congratulations on expanding your business! It would have been helpful if you specified what type of business you are in. Yes, cul-de-sac is not the best location neither for business, nor for home, as energy-wise the buildings on cul-de-sac are "struggling" for more chi/energy. However, there are certainly other factors, too, and you should focus on strengthening them in order to lessen the cul-de-sac effect.

Your main door is a major one, no matter what business you are in. It should convey the message of strength, success and prosperity. Take a good, critical look at the main door, as well as the first impressions as you come in. Be sure your company name is visible, in a well-lit place and certainly be sure that the street numbers are in a high, visible place. (I once had to look for a new client literally for over half an hour, and although I drove by quite a few times, I couldn't find their building, it was very frustrating!)

Your main door/entrance should have clear, vibrant and strong energy, as we are talking about attracting chi, or vital energy to help manifest your goals. There is a saying: "Prosperity won't know where to stop if it doesn't know your house number." Be sure your success and prosperity knows where to stop and is welcomed in your space! Other remedies would be an outside water feature to attract more energy, an "energy activator" (any rotating/moving item); and/or strategically placed lights. Good luck!

Additional info for the e-zine readers:

Below is an illustration on the importance of the main entrance in business (a picture is worth a thousand words!) It is the entrance to a local fitness company, a past client. Just look at the image to the left, then at the one to the right. Note your body's instant reaction. Which door would you rather come in? Why?

And what story is your main entrance telling?
