ARE YOU LIVING THE LIFE YOU WANT?

I recently stayed in a cute little hotel in Paris and my windows were overlooking a very small courtyard. It would have been quite a sad view, to face a wall, if not for the great French invention - the famous Trompe d'Oeil - excellent Feng Shui in action! A plain wall came to life with a colorful visual escape, providing pleasure to the eye, and a touch of magic to the soul!

It is this intricate relationship between humans and the world surrounding them that makes feng shui so fascinating. What is real, and what is not? Can you always spot the difference?

One of my favorite Feng Shui teachers likes to explain in a funny way the reason why high quality silk plants work as well as the live ones (when you need them for purposes other than air-purifying and refining the energy.) The Chi, he says, is strongly attracted by the beautiful plant, and by the time it gets there and "sees" the plant is not real, it is too late to go back! So the mission is accomplished and strong, vibrant Chi is attracted.

Back in Vancouver, while writing this newsletter, I saw something quite amazing unfold right in front of my eyes. I actually managed to trick the bees! The big art collage on the Western wall of my home office, which is made up of various inspiring to me images, attracted not one, but several of them! I was amused watching the bees choose the brightest spots with stunning images of blooming flowers and check them out, one by one. Yes, those are not real flowers, but their depiction is so beautiful that even the bees got fooled! (And they should know better, shouldn't they?)

Where am I going with these stories and how are they related to you living the life you want? Do I mean you have to start fooling yourself? No, I certainly do not, but how about a more playful approach to your dreams and goals? When you take things too seriously, you tend to be afraid of any change and put too much weight on the "tomorrow" and "preparing yourself for it." We never live in tomorrow, though; it is always today, so why not start making the best of it now?

Your environment comes into play as it reflects and supports you, being connected with thousands of energy threads to your own energy field. There are many energy enhancers and attractors in Feng Shui to help you live the life you want, but you have to choose them wisely.

And if Feng Shui still sounds too esoteric for you, here's how Sir Winston Churchill explained it: "First we shape our dwellings, and then our dwellings shape us." It's a great explanation of why Feng Shui works!

Is your dwelling shaped wisely? Are you living the life you want?

You do not have to answer these questions to anyone but yourself.

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q: I have a quick question. I'm hoping to buy some lawn furniture (outdoor dining table, dining chairs and two lounge chairs) for our sunny, south-facing back garden. I've read Lillian Too's Guide to Gardening book and she recommends wood furniture for a garden in the south. I like wood furniture but my husband is leaning towards wrought iron (which I also like because it's so durable and low-maintenance.) Which would you recommend? Thank you!
(Liz Hudson, Vancouver)

A: Yes, a garden in the South will benefit from wood furniture because the Element of South is Fire, and Wood feeds the Fire. Thus, by creating a harmonious (productive) relationship between elements, you achieve a more harmonious, balanced energy.

However, it is also OK to go for wrought iron furniture as long as you can choose a color other than black, which is a Water color. Wrought iron furniture with some Wood would be even better. Also, be sure to avoid any Water features in the South. Good luck!
